Nuovi Premium Styles - Smooth Sounds e Marching Band Beats

New Holiday PianoSoft - Get In the Spirit With Modern Christmas Hits

Christmas today, with it's elaborate lighting displays and extravagant shopping sprees, is a far cry from the holiday as it was celebrated for much of its history. Christmas music has changed with the years, too - from purely religious pieces, such as Handel's Messiah, to the mix of popular and religious themes that became the Christmas carols we sing today. The PianoSoft catalog of holiday music includes albums featuring songs from all of these different eras of Christmas music, but the two new albums released this week are all about popular hits that have become Christmas favorites in the more recent past. Legends like Bob Hope, Burl Ives and Bing Crosby left their stamp on Christmas music, and stars like Mariah Carey and the Carpenters continued to put their generations' spin on the season. You'll hear all of this in more in "A Modern Christmas" and "The Best Selling Christmas Songs of All Time".

The Best Selling Christmas Songs of All Time

How do you determine the greatest Christmas songs of all time? It's pretty hard to compare "Silent Night" to "Santa Baby", but we can at least look at sales numbers to find the most popular songs of the past sixty or so holiday seasons. That's exactly what pianist Bryan Pezzone has done for this album, which features songs that became synonymous with Christmas during the 20th century. These are the tunes, like "Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree" and "I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus" that have accompanied Christmas for years, now arranged for solo piano and played with Pezzone's masterful and subtle jazzy touches. With even a little latin flavor thrown in to many of these renditions, this is truly a modern collection of holiday songs.

A Modern Christmas

This fun and festive album includes holiday songs from some of the world's biggest artists, which have quickly become beloved and universally known classics. From Wham!'s "Last Christmas" and Mariah Carey's "All I Want For Christmas Is You", all the way to Josh Groban's "Believe" and Trans Siberian Orchestra's "Sarajevo 12/24" medley , this album covers the whole spectrum of modern holiday music. All of the songs are arranged and performed by pianist Joel Plimmer, for piano complete with full instrumental accompaniment.

Brace Yourself For the Vintage Keyboard Premium Pack

Next month Yamaha will unveil the latest Premium Pack for the Tyros4, the Vintage Keyboard Pack. Adding a whole new set of electric piano and synth sounds, the Vintage Keyboard pack will be a real treat for fans of analog and early digital keyboard sounds. The vintage sounds included in the pack recreate instruments that have been heard in a variety of legendary recordings, by hundreds of popular artists, and with these sounds at your fingertips, you'll be able to create even more new legendary tracks.

Included in the pack are a variety of voices which simulate classic electronic piano sounds. The unique sounds of these pianos were a result of their particular construction, in which metal tines or reeds were struck by hammers, with the sound then amplified by electromagnetic pickups. In the Vintage Keyboard pack, Yamaha has created voices which masterfully emulate both the reed and tine variations of these 'electro-mechanical' electronic pianos.

In addition to the recreation of these well known electric piano sounds, this pack includes voices from two of Yamaha’s most popular keyboard models, the legendary Yamaha DX7 and the Yamaha CP80.

With these new sounds on the way, it's a perfect time to revisit some of the songs that made these vintage keyboards famous. Take a look below for some examples:
  • Superstition - Stevie Wonder
Superstition is one of the most instantly recognizable songs in pop music, and one of Stevie Wonder's biggest hit's of all time. This track features layers and layers of the "Funky Clav". You can believe in things you don't understand with this MIDI file.
  • Boogie Oogie Oogie - A Taste of Honey
Here's an example of the Funky Clav used outside of funk music. In the age of Disco, this song was a chart topper! Its walking bass line intertwined with the Clavinet is enough to make anyone want to Boogie Oogie Oogie till they just can't boogie no more!
  • Hard Habit to Break - Chicago
The Yamaha DX7 was the first synthesizer to receive commercial success, and acclaim from critics and musicians alike. Chicago built "Hard Habit to Break" around this vintage keyboard's classic sound, and now you can play along with your Yamaha keyboard.
  • Summer in the City - The Lovin Spoonful
The Lovin' Spoonful made good use of the electric piano on "Summer in the City". This vintage keyboard delivers a synthesized piano sound, mixed with overtones that sound similar to the harpsichord.
  • Get Back - The Beatles and Billy Preston
The Beatles' "Get Back" features a prominent electric piano line played by Billy Preston. The piano solo in this song is what contributed to the first ever songwriting credit outside the Beatles' three main songwriters, with a credit to Billy Preston himself.
The new Vintage Keyboard Pack follows up on the packs and voices released last year for the Tyros3. In addition to the forthcoming pack, the Euro and US Organs Pack, the Choir and Vocals Pack, as well as the SA2 Pan Flute and Trombone voices, are all now available in new versions for the Tyros4.

Keep your eyes peeled for more information about these new voices and packs in the coming weeks.

Warm Up With Coldplay - Learn to Play Like Chris Martin

Coldplay has become one of the biggest rock bands in the world by writing powerful, epic songs based most often around that most powerful and epic instrument, the piano. Inspired equally by U2's rock anthems and brit-pop's mellower introspection, Coldplay's lead vocalist and pianist Chris Martin, creates vocal lines and keyboard accompaniments that are melodic, memorable, and elegant in their simplicity. Like many great rock musicians before him, Martin has learned how to create the maximum effect out of basic musical parts: many of Coldplay's songs are based around simple piano figures that are tons of fun to play. So, while Coldplay's songs may be hard to get out of your head, they're surprisingly easy to play!

The best way to start learning Coldplay's songs is just to jump right in. One way to this is with sheet music, like this "Best of Coldplay for Easy Piano" book. For a more interactive experience, though, MIDI versions of Coldplay's songs are a great place to start. Learning with MIDI files on your keyboard will give you the chance to customize each song to fit your learning and practicing needs. For example:
  • Hear what you're trying to learn. By isolating the piano and keyboard parts in the song, you can focus on training your hands to play just like a professional recording.
  • Play with a full band backing track. You can easily mute the piano part and play along with the song's full accompaniment, which helps you learn by adding context to your playing.
  • Learn at your own speed. Slow down the track to make it easier to play, or speed it up for a bigger challenge.
  • Let the song follow you. With the guide mode, you can tell the song to follow your playing - when you play the right notes, the song will continue. This is a great way to test yourself as you're learning to play.

For the most part, Martin's piano parts show an emphasis on rhythmic accents, without being too harmonically or rhythmically complex. For more detailed observations on specific songs, we've made a few suggestions below, including designations for finding the piano channels in each song. You can also consult this guide for more tips on learning with MIDI files.

Clocks
Piano on Track 4

The piano part in this song is unmistakable, and it consists almost entirely of arpeggios played in the right hand. The rhythm is the key to the riff, but you can start by just making sure your hand can play the chords themselves, before adding the descending rhythmic pattern. The version of the song in this file is in Eb major, which may be a difficult key to play in if you're new to the keyboard. Your keyboard can easily transpose it down one half step to D or up two half steps to F, which will make it easier to play.

Viva La Vida
Piano on Track 6

There's a lot going on in "Viva La Vida" besides the piano, including a full string section, but the piano part is still a vitally important part of the song. Like many of these songs it features mainly chords, this time played in eighth notes, with a syncopated pattern of accents that repeats throughout the song.

The Scientist
Piano on Track 4

One of Coldplay's signature ballads, this song combines an emotive melody with a piano part simple enough for even beginner players to pick up with a little work. The speed of the song is slow enough that you should be able to play the right hand quarter note chords without straining yourself or adjusting the tempo, and they stay consistent throughout the entire song. As the lyrics say, "nobody said it was easy", but learning this song is a great place to start if you're getting started with MIDI files.

Trouble
Piano on Track 5

"Trouble", one of Coldplay's more melancholy, minor key singles, features a neat piano riff that appears in all of the bridge sections between choruses and verses and is pretty easy to learn too. The piano in the rest of the song plays out with where, again, the emphasis is all in the accents in the right hand chords.

Speed of Sound
Piano on Track 4, Synth on Track 6

Featuring both a piano part, which appears only during the intro and bridges of the song, as well as a synthesizer which takes the place of the piano on the verses and choruses, how you play this song is more open to interpretation. Follow the song's chords and you can't go wrong.

Find the Perfect Piano Music For the Holidays

With the return of the Holiday Favorites channel on Piano Radio this week, you can now get unlimited holiday music on your keyboard or piano, without setting up playlists, choosing albums, or worrying about switching between albums to hear the songs you want. Of course, for times when you want more control over your musical selections, it's easy to pick out the perfect music to fit a particular moment with individual PianoSoft albums (and individual songs available from the Disklavier Music Store on Internet Direct Connection). Still, with dozens of holiday themed PianoSoft albums to choose from, it's easy to get overwhelmed when trying to find the right music to fit your tastes. To help you out, we've picked ten of our favorite albums with descriptions and samples which should get you off to a running start on your search.

Jim Brickman - Winter Peace
Bring the beloved new-age pianist Jim Brickman to your piano this holiday season. Brickman's Christmas album, Peace, was nominated for a Grammy in 2003 so it's clear that he knows his way around holiday music just as well as he does the love songs and mellow ballads he's famous for producing.

Christmas Carols
The most popular holiday PianoSoft album of all time features beautiful arrangements of 14 of the season’s most well known carols.

A New Age/Jazzy Christmas - Garson Style
The famed and eclectic pianist Mike Garson, who has worked extensively with rock acts like David Bowie and the Smashing Pumpkins while simultaneously pursuing his own career in jazz, brings some new jazz and new age flavor to a whopping 19 holiday favorites on this fantastic album.

Peaceful Christmas
The name of this album really says it all. Pianist Bryan Pezzone's brings an open, airy playing style and an improvisational approach to these songs which highlights the tranquility and peaceful message of the season.

Traditional Christmas "Sing-Along"
With songs arranged in a simple, easy to follow style, this album is perfect for those times you wish you could star a sing-along around the piano, but don't have a an accompanist available. Note that lyrics are not included with this album, but with songs as famous as "Silent Night" and "Joy to the World", chances are you know the words already!

Songs For Christmas - Volume 2
Venturing between soft, contemplative renditions of "I Wonder as I Wander" and "White Christmas", and rousing takes on "I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus" and "Winter Wonderland", this album covers the full range of holiday music with energetic, exciting performances.

Christmas Fantasy - Bryan Pezzone
Featuring expressive performances of some less frequently heard holiday gems, like "The Coventry Carol" and "Carol of the Bells", this album is a real treat when you're looking for a break from the standard holiday fare.

Selections from "A Charlie Brown Christmas"
Written for the Peanuts Christmas special, songs like "Christmas Time Is Here" and "Linus and Lucy" have become beloved holiday favorites – hear them all in this collection, with drum and bass accompaniment just like on the original recordings.

Jolly Christmas
A rollicking mix of recent favorites, such as "Santa Baby" and "A Holly Jolly Christmas" all with MIDI accompaniment.

Christmas Favorites
Some of the most famous and beloved carols of all time, complete with full MIDI accompaniment, featuring string heavy orchestral arrangements.

Odes To (And From) the Organ

Organs, one of the oldest instruments, have come in many varieties over the years (from the hydraulis to the calliope but they have always been prized for their power and versatility. With the birth of electronic organs, the number of distinct, fascinating and useful organ sounds became larger than ever. With so many great different organ sounds in the world, it's hard for a keyboard player to settle on just one, which makes a keyboard with the ability to call up a large selection of organ sounds look pretty attractive.

Yamaha's latest keyboards all have fantastic organ sounds, and some even include full drawbar control, which allows you to not only get an authentic electric organ sound, but also get the same control you'd have on a vintage analog instrument.

But since the range of sounds organs can make is so vast, Yamaha has also produced additional organ voices to give you even more options and even more realism when you want play with an organ sound. These voices add over 30 new organ sounds and they sound even better on the Tyros4!

Here's Yamaha's own Martin Harris showing one example of the great organ voices that come in the US and Euro Organs Premium Pack.

So what can you play with these organ sounds? In addition to traditional classical pieces, such as Bach's "Tocatta and Fugue in D Minor", organs have been famously used in pop and rock songs, like the ones we've listed below. Each of these songs is available in MIDI format from Yamaha MusicSoft, so that you can learn them, play along and create your own performances, just like we have in the videos below.  And be sure to keep reading to check out even more great organ songs!

New Premium Styles - Smooth Sounds and Marching Band Beats

A Yamaha keyboard is designed to do a lot of things - help you learn to play, give you great instrument sounds, provide new and exciting ways to make music - but it isn't exactly designed to be used in a marching band. That doesn't mean, though, that they can't sound like a marching band! With the latest Premium Styles you have the chance to transform your keyboard into a full concert of marching band, or tone things down with some smooth jazz sounds.

The two new styles are each available in five different versions designed to suit each specific instrument type, including an optimized version dedicated to the new Tyros4, so you can be sure you're getting the best quality style for your particular keyboard model whether you're using a Clavinova or a workstation keyboard.

Watch and listen to some demonstrations of the new styles from the always wonderful Martin Harris on the Tyros4.

School Band March - Marches are a staple of both concert and marching bands, with the American marches of John Phillips Sousa perhaps being the most widely heard. With a brass and woodwind heavy arrangement suitable to the sound of either a marching band or concert band, this style will work equally well in accompanying a Sousa march or, for example, a college fight song.

US Smooth Ballad - Smooth is definitely the perfect word to describe this style. Whether you use it to play jazz or pop, what you'll get is a laid back sound with sparse, tasteful drumming, bass and guitar over which you're free to play your own solos.

Update: Please note that as of 11-5, the price of Premium Styles has changed from $6.95 to $8.95.
