The Oscars Channel on Piano Radio: Soundtracks and Award Winners Galore

For movie fans there are few nights bigger than Oscar night, and with less than two weeks til the ceremony it's about time to get in the movie mood. To help kick of the festivities a little early, Yamaha's Piano Radio has just added the Oscars channel. The new channel will be broadcasting 24/7 right up through the ceremony on Sunday, March 7th, and every song you'll hear on the Oscars channel was included in an Oscar-nominated or Oscar-winning film, or was nominated for (or won) an Oscar itself. Of course, the new channel features the same great piano arrangements and performances that PianoSoft and Piano Radio are known for.

Over the years Oscars for Best Original Song have gone to songs as diverse as Bob Hope's "Buttons and Bows", which won in 1948, and Eminem's "Lose Yourself" which won in 2005. While we can safely say that neither of these songs are likely to turn up on the Oscars channel, this gives you some idea of the diversity of music the channel has in store. For a sample of what you can expect, take a listen to these clips:

Over the Rainbow from the Wizard of Oz (found on "Selections From the Wizard of Oz")

Edelweiss from The Sound of Music (found on "Best Broadway Ballads")

And don't forget to tune in to see which song wins the Best Original Song prize this year - the nominees are:

"Almost There" from The Princess and the Frog
"Down in New Orleans" from The Princess and the Frog
"Loin de Paname" from Paris 36
"Take It All" from Nine
"The Weary Kind (Theme from Crazy Heart)" from Crazy Heart

The Oscars channel is just the latest addition to our channel lineup, which includes 15 other stations available around the clock and throughout the year. For anyone listening to radio on a CLP Clavinova or MODUS digital piano, the Oscars channel is your new channel 16.

To try out the Oscars channel now, first log in to Internet Direct Connection on your instrument and choose "Listen to Radio", or from a Disklavier Mark IV choose "Internet" from the main menu on your controller, then "Disklavier Radio".  On a Disklavier E3, press the "Internet" button on your remote, then choose "D-Radio".  If you haven't created an account for Internet Direct Connection, you'll need to do that before subscribing to Piano Radio - you can create your account here.

If you've never tried Piano Radio before, now's the perfect time. If you're not ready to subscribe and check out the Oscars channel, that's fine.  Two free channels are available right now - all you need to do is get your keyboard online and you can be enjoying streaming music within seconds. Follow this guide for help with connecting to the internet, or head here if you're ready to subscribe. For more information on Yamaha's Piano Radio, visit our Online Services site.

Learn to Play With Faber Piano Adventures

This week, we're proud to announce the introduction of Faber Piano Adventures books to the Yamaha MusicSoft catalog. The Faber Piano Adventures lesson system is one of the most popular piano lesson methods in the US, used by thousands of piano educators across the country and beyond. The extensive range of lessons produced by Faber offers something for anyone who wants to learn the piano.

The Piano Adventures system starts with beginner lessons and primer books.  These books give young beginners the fundamental instruction and exercises they need to set the right course for their piano studies.  However, Faber also has a course for adults who are beginning to take up the piano, the accelerated Piano Adventures series for older beginners and teenagers, and even lessons for very young beginners.  Beyond the lesson books, theory books and work books for the various different courses, Faber also provides individual piano pieces and song collections to suit piano students throughout their studies.  Click here to see the full range of books available.

Yamaha takes great pride in supporting music education so it's wonderful that the philosophy behind Faber's method is so much in keeping with Yamaha's educational ideals. The Fabers' biography stresses that they, "advocate piano study not only for personal expression and performance success, but also as a vehicle for the student's creative and cognitive development." Yamaha's educational wing, the Yamaha Music Foundation makes a very similar statement, stressing their commitment to "explor[ing] fundamental issues of educational activities pertaining to music that serve as a basis to cultivate a rich sense of humanity in toddlers, young children, youths and adults, [and] to pursu[ing] the popularization of music and contribute widely to the promotion of social education."

More New Styles From Yamaha Europe

When we released over 50 great new styles two weeks ago you may have thought that was all she wrote, but it turns out that those styles were only half of the story. This week we've added another 40 styles for sale at Yamaha MusicSoft. Like the previously released styles, these come to you courtesy of Yamaha's European labs and the German Download Shop.

Feel free to browse the full list of new styles, but first take a listen to some of our favorites:

Limbo Soul Groove - Led by a prominent walking bassline and cowbell, this is a fun pop style with just a taste of island rhythm.

Funky Polka - Oompah that swings! This style adds a twist to the standard polka that makes for an irresistable dance beat.

Zicken Fox Foxtrot - A jazzy foxtrot beat with organ and piano that sounds great and is flexible enough to be used any time you want that lounge combo sound.

Band March - It's an uptempo march with a driving beat, but what sets this style apart is the ability to slow things down with a half-time section.

Béon Dance - A mid tempo style with big drums and strings that's perfect for contemporary hip-hop influenced pop and R&B.

There's much more where these five styles came from, though. Whether you're looking for more Latin, Eastern European, or Schlager styles, click here to see the full list of this week's new releases.

Try Out Over 50 New Styles From Yamaha Europe

Last month we introduced hundreds of new songs from Yamaha's German Download Shop to Yamaha MusicSoft and Internet Direct Connection, and this month we are keeping the trend going with new styles.  Our friends at Yamaha Europe have been producing excellent styles for their keyboard players for years, and now players around the world can start enjoying them, too.

Pretty much any type of music you're interested in will covered by at least one of this week's new styles.  However, many of the new files cover traditional music styles, such as polkas, marches and waltzes, so if you're looking to venture out of the typical pop and rock repertoire, this is a great chance to give it shot.

You can, and should, take a look at all of the new available styles, but to get you started, here are samples of ten of our favorites:

Celebration Dance - A hard driving dance beat with house music synths.  A very flexible style for any electronic dance song.

Kelly Beat - A rock style with incredibly authentic sounding distorted guitars.

Robby Feel Beat - A smooth electronic beat with synth strings and a great reverbed, trancy piano sound.

Bohemian Waltz - With low brass carrying the bass, and horns and winds leading the harmonic accompaniment, this style provides the perfect accompaniment to a mid tempo waltz.

Mas Que Samba - A vibrant latin dance beat, lead by piano, complete with handclaps and claves.

5-8 Greek - You'll be hard pressed to find another style in 5-8, and this one sounds wonderful - complete with bouzouki!

Off Beat - Don't be confused by the name, this style is right on - a versatile pop beat with a disco feel.

Aprés Ski Polka - This style captures the particular modern European take on polka, with an electronic four-on-the-floor beat and accordion.

Blues Shuffle - An organ based blues style that will sound right at home playing any sort of upbeat pop.

But there's way more where that came from - keep reading for a full list of new styles.

New PianoSoft - Classic Instrumentals From The 50's and 60's

This week we're pleased to announce the latest addition to the PianoSoft Plus catalog, "Instrumental Greats", from pianist and arranger Jason Nyberg. A compilation of some of the most familiar melodies from the 50's and 60's, "Instrumental Greats" will be a welcome addition to the PianoSoft collection of oldies fans, and is an ideal choice for background music in any situation.

Though the songs on the album come from many different places - TV, movie soundtracks, jazz, rock novelty records, and classical pops - all of them became popular staples during the 50's and 60's by way of instrumental arrangements. They include tunes made famous by band leaders Percy Faith and Guy Lambardo, who created some of the most popular instrumental records of the era with their arrangements of movie themes, as well as surf-rock favorites from the Ventures and the Tornadoes. For an example of how Jason Nyberg translates this into PianoSoft, take a listen to a sample of the "Third Man Theme" below:

It was an era of beautiful melodies, lush orchestration and understated performance, and Jason Nyberg does a wonderful job of capturing the essence of each song. Combining his artful, precise piano work with MIDI accompaniments, he's created versions of the classics like "Theme from a Summer Place" and "Telstar" that rival the originals. From the jaunty playfulness of "the Syncopated Clock" to the drama of the theme from "Hawaii Five-O", Jason's arrangements capture a fun, nostalgic mood.

"Instrumental Greats" is now available on both Yamaha MusicSoft - Yamaha's official online store - and Internet Direct Connection - Yamaha's official "on-instrument" website. In addition to providing new songs, styles, lessons, and streaming radio for your instrument, Internet Direct Connection also offers a variety of free stuff such instrument setups and registration patches and two free radio channels. Last night's Grammy awards ceremony certainly did not disappoint. With everything from an unexpected piano duet between a fake blood spattered Elton John and Lady Gaga, to a moving tribute to Michael Jackson from Celine Dion, Usher, Carrie Underwood, Smokey Robinson, and Jennifer Hudson, to outstanding performances from Beyonce and Pink, those of us watching at home no doubt went to bed with our hunger for musical spectacles satisfied.

Unfortunately, though, some of our beloved Grammy nonimated PianoSoft artists, Philippe Saisse, Bob Florence, Tom Zink and Jim Brickman did go home disappointed after missing out on awards last night. The legendary Chick Corea, however, both a Yamaha artist and a PianoSoft artist, beat out a field that included Pat Metheny and Allen Toussaint to win the Grammy for "Best Jazz Instrumental Album, Individual Or Group" for his album with John McLaughlin and the Five Peace Band, Five Peace Band - Live.  Prolific PianoSoft artist Bill Cunliffe also took home an award for "Best Instrumental Arrangement", commending his work on the song "West Side Story Medley" from Resonance Big Band Plays Tribute To Oscar Peterson.

Of course, the awards weren't just about breathtaking performances or congratulating our Yamaha family, they were also about recognizing all of the great music that has been produced over the past year. And now you can give them your own recognition by learning and playing them on your keyboard! We have MIDI versions of tons of Grammy winning songs that you can load on your keyboard to play along with, as well as downloadable sheet music you can use to learn the songs.

Keep reading for a full list of 2010's Grammy award winning songs, available in MIDI versions for your instrument from Yamaha MusicSoft or Internet Direct Connection.
